13 Jul Couple of the month: Wen Jie Zhou&Dot Zhang
In this article cycle, we will post interviews with some of our wedding couples to help you better understand the preparation process as well as what to expect from the dance on the big day. You can see the dance video at the end of the article!
Dance style: West Coast Swing
Song: I Feel Good by Pink Sweat$
Amount of Lessons: 10H + trial lesson
1. How did you pick a song for your first dance?
We searchedSpotify for a fun and positive song with a somewhat slow tempo so we could more easily stay on beat! Luckily we found Pink Sweat$ and loved the lyrics of our selected song. Our instructor Alina also helped choreograph a dance that really matched the song!
2. What was the most important requirement for your wedding dance?
Fun and upbeat!
3. How many months in advance did you start? Did you have a dance experience before?
Neither of us had dance experience and we started about 3 months in advance.
4. What was the biggest challenge for you preparing the dance and how did you overcome it?
Memorizing choreo was a new challenge for us, but Alina recorded all our sessions and broke down all the movements so we could easily practice at home.
5. Did you feel comfortable on the dance floor on the day of the wedding?
Definitely nervous but we both felt prepared!
6. Tell our future couples what to expect from the wedding dance on the day of!
It goes by very quickly so enjoy it! With all your loved ones surrounding you and cheering you on, it really doesn’t matter if any mistakes are made! They will love anything you do!
7. How did you feel after the performance on the day of?
Great! We had a lot of fun performing it.
8. What advice can you give to the couples?
Do a little bit of homework in terms of the type of dance you would like to perform so if you’re short on time (like we were) you can have productive conversations with your instructor right from the start! There’s so many great examples online – we loved looking at all the other couple videos from Brooklyn Dance Lessons! If you’re hesitating on whether you need lessons, highly recommend trying at least 1-2 sessions. Even if you don’t end up doing a full choreographed routine, it’s helpful to pickup some dance moves! We also had a lot fun learning a completely new skill. Lastly, try to practice as much as possible in between lessons!
9. Are you going to dance after the wedding?
Planning on busting out moves at our friend’s wedding this summer 🙂
