16 Oct Couple of the month: Maria & Aidan
In this article cycle, we will post interviews with some of our wedding couples to help you better understand the preparation process as well as what to expect from the dance on the big day. You can see the dance video at the end of the article!
Dance style: Rumba
Amount of Lessons: 5 H
Song: Truly Madly Deeply” (Yoke Lore Cover)
1. How did you pick a song for your first dance?
Truly Madly Deeply (Yoke Lore) is a song we love to listen to on long drives. When we were picking a song, we both chose it as our first choice. We took two group classes before our four individual sessions so we also got a good idea of how different tempo songs would feel.
2. What was the most important requirement for your wedding dance?
Neither of us have been big dancers in the past so we were nervous and a little stressed about our first dance. We wanted to feel comfortable. Our instructor, Alyona, was amazing! She gave clear and tailored guidance and made sure we not only felt comfortable dancing, but also had a ton of fun.
3. How many months in advance did you start? Did you have a dance experience before?
3 months – no experience
4. What was the biggest challenge for you preparing the dance and how did you overcome it?
Making time to practice. Since neither of us had dance experience, it took a few tries for the movements to feel natural. We ended up treating dance practice as a mini date night, so it became something we looked forward to each week – even if it was only 15 mins! By the time we stepped on the dance floor for real, we could focus on enjoying ourselves rather than trying to remember the steps.
5. Did you feel comfortable on the dance floor on the day of the wedding?
Absolutely, our first dance ended up being one of the highlights of the day. It was such a joy to dance with each other, and we surprised more than few guests with the choreography!
6. Tell our future couples what to expect from the wedding dance on the day of!
It flies by so it was important to be present and enjoy it. Plus no one knew if we missed a step (which we did!).
7. How did you feel after the performance on the day of?
Amazing, like we absolutely crushed it!
8. What advice can you give to the couples?
If you can, join a Comfy Dance session. Practicing in front of other couples built our confidence, and you get used to an audience that claps and cheers 🙂 It’s also fun to see what other people have been working on. Everyone’s dance was so personalized to the couple.
9. Are you going to dance after the wedding? 🙂
Yes! Taking dance classes together felt like it unlocked a whole new activity that the two of us can do together. One of the lessons before us was a couple who got married a year ago and came back to refresh their first dance together. We love the idea that our dance is something we can always go back to.
