1. How did you pick a song for your first dance?
A few months into dating, Pat bought Seton a music box that played “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” It has been our song ever since, so choosing it for our first dance was easy.
2. What was the most important requirement for your wedding dance?
We wanted to feel comfortable enough to enjoy the moment, while also making
the dance fun for our guests to watch.
3. How many months in advance did you start? Did you have a dance experience before?
We initially signed up for a three-class wedding dance cycle about eight months before our wedding to see if we enjoyed taking classes. We ended up loving it so much that we bought a 10-pack and continued taking about two classes a month until the wedding day.
We had no formal dance experience. Seton was a figure skater growing up, so some of the concepts felt familiar, but everything was brand new for Pat.
4. What was the biggest challenge for you preparing the dance and how did you overcome it?
Finding physical space to practice was probably the biggest challenge. We live in a small apartment and were preparing throughout the winter, so practicing outside was not really an option. We made the most of the space we had and focused on practicing with tiny steps!
5. Did you feel comfortable on the dance floor on the day of the wedding?
Yes, very comfortable. It was such a nice feeling to let muscle memory take over and enjoy the moment together.
6. Tell our future couples what to expect from the wedding dance on the day of!
Expect more adrenaline than you can imagine. There will be more eyes on you than you are used to, and it will be much louder and feel more exciting than it did during practice.
7. How did you feel after the performance on the day of?
Full of joy!
8. What advice can you give to the couples?
Practice enough times that you become comfortable recovering from little mistakes. If you mess up during practice, keep going rather than starting over every time. That way, if something small happens on the wedding day, you won’t get flustered.
Also, if you have a live band, make sure they know to match the tempo of the original song and have the correct starting and stopping points.
9. Are you going to dance after the wedding? 🙂
Yes! Our dance classes were easily one of our favorite parts of wedding prep, and we’d love to continue having that quality time together now that we’re married.
