19 Jul Couple of the month: Katrin & Philip
In this article cycle, we will post interviews with some of our wedding couples to help you better understand the preparation process as well as what to expect from the dance on the big day. You can see the dance video at the end of the article!
Dance style: Rumba, Foxtrot, and Hustle
Song: Ben Howard’s “Old Pine”
Amount of Lessons: 10 + Intro to Ballroom Cycle
1. How did you pick a song for your first dance?
Music plays a huge role in our lives – we frequently attend indie/alternative concerts. We wanted to select a song that describes us and our partnership instead of opting for a more “classic” wedding song.
It turned out that Ben Howard’s “Old Pine” was not the easiest choice haha but Emily did a fantastic job with the choreography and teaching.
2. What was the most important requirement for your wedding dance?
The initial goal was to just feel comfortable on the dance floor. We never expected to be able to perform a full 4min choreography after only 10 lessons. 😀
3. How many months in advance did you start? Did you have a dance experience before?
As we just moved to NYC in June last year and our wedding was in September, it was all quite last-minute 😀
Philip had dance lessons before but I never did, so it was important for me to learn at least some basic steps. In the end we were both surprised and proud of what we were capable of.
4. What was the biggest challenge for you preparing the dance and how did you overcome it?
Our song has many changes in tempo and lacks a dominant beat, so we really had to concentrate to hit the timing. We practised a lot and used specific words in the lyrics as cues.
5. Did you feel comfortable on the dance floor on the day of the wedding?
We promised ourselves to just have fun on the dance floor, no matter what happens 😀
Despite all the practising we still felt nervous, but as soon as the song started, we just enjoyed it.
6. Tell our future couples what to expect from the wedding dance on the day of!
Try not to be perfect, embrace the small mistakes that might happen – they even make it more personal and enjoyable to watch.
7. How did you feel after the performance on the day of?
Relieved and proud 😀 The dance was the last official part of our wedding day and afterwards the big party started.
8. What advice can you give to the couples?
Pick a song you like – you will hear it a lot! 😀
And you can’t go wrong with choosing “Brooklyn Dance Lessons” – the instructors are incredible.
9. Are you going to dance after the wedding? 🙂
Apart from our wedding dance lessons we had also booked the “Intro to Ballroom” and really enjoyed the group lessons. That’s why we’re planning on continuing to take some courses in the future.
