Couple of the month: Christopher and Christina

In this article cycle, we will post interviews with some of our wedding couples to help you better understand the preparation process as well as what to expect from the dance on the big day. You can see the dance video at the end of the article!

Dance style: Waltz
Song: Mia & Sebastian’s Theme  from La La Land
Amount of Lessons: 12

1. How did you pick a song for your first dance?

We saw La La Land on our very first date and knew we wanted to pick a song from the musical! We loved Mia and Sebastian’s theme and found an awesome orchestral arrangement.

2. What was the most important requirement for your wedding dance?

It was most important that we had fun and also pushed ourselves to go out of our comfort zone to learn something new.

3. How many months in advance did you start? Did you have a dance experience before?

Chrissy had done some dance classes in high school, but neither of us have done pairs/ballroom dancing before! We first took an Intro to Ballroom group class about 6 months before our wedding to test out the waters. We started our wedding dance lessons about 4 months before to make sure we’d have plenty of time to learn and practice!

4. What was the biggest challenge for you preparing the dance and how did you overcome it?

I think the first was actually trying ballroom for the first time! Chris almost backed out of the group class due to nerves of dancing around others for the first time! The second challenge was for Chrissy to let go and to let Chris lead. The third was getting used to dancing in the dress. We practiced with a skirt provided by the studio, but on the day of we snuck off to practice our dance before all the guests arrived and it was SO helpful. It calmed our nerves and as a bonus we got some awesome moments with just our photographers and videographer there. I suppose you can call it our private “last dance” before marriage.

5. Did you feel comfortable on the dance floor on the day of the wedding?

Extremely! Weirdly neither of us were nervous and just enjoyed the moment. Alyona did an awesome job helping us prepare.

6. Tell our future couples what to expect from the wedding dance on the day of!

It’s loud and chaotic and there’s a bunch of flashing lights, somehow for us though we were totally in the moment. Let your DJ know to wait until you are in position to start the music! We got caught off guard but all the practice paid off and we caught up.

7. How did you feel after the performance on the day of?

Awesome! We were ready to relax and celebrate.

8. What advice can you give to the couples?

PRACTICE! The more you practice at home the easier it will be the day of! If you slip or make a mistake don’t sweat it and keep going. In the moment it feels WAY more obvious than it looks (can you tell Chrissy stepped on her dress and almost wiped out?). I promise you look 100% better than you feel.

9. Are you going to dance after the wedding? 🙂

Yes! We’re thinking of trying some latin dance at some point in the future.
