Couple of the month: Amanda and Patrick

In this article cycle, we will post interviews with some of our wedding couples to help you better understand the preparation process as well as what to expect from the dance on the big day. You can see the dance video at the end of the article!

Dance style: Rumba and Hustle
Song: The XX Islands
Amount of Lessons: 13 + Comfy Dance event

1. How did you pick a song for your first dance?

Our song is called Islands by an English band called The xx. I always loved this band and I came across the song and listened to the romantic lyrics more closely when I was going back through my music collection. Patrick loved it right away too and thought it was perfect for us.

2. What was the most important requirement for your wedding dance?

We wanted it to be a little different and surprising, and we loved the unusual tempo.

3. How many months in advance did you start? Did you have a dance experience before?

We had no experience whatsoever, so we started as early as possible! We think our first lesson with Marius was five months out from the ceremony.

4. What was the biggest challenge for you preparing the dance and how did you overcome it?

As attorneys, it was very difficult for our schedules to line up so we could practice during the busy months of wedding planning and our apartment is actually not even big enough for us to practice our full dance. We worked hard in our lessons with Marius to make sure we devoted enough time to preparing.

5. Did you feel comfortable on the dance floor on the day of the wedding?

Other than the normal butterflies, it was almost supernaturally calm and comfortable. We went right into our routine without hesitation, and danced it like we had every day of our lives.

6. Tell our future couples what to expect from the wedding dance on the day of!

It’ll creep up on you (there are so many other things to think about before that) and then suddenly, you’ll be doing it! Muscle memory kicks in! Enjoy every second of it!

7. How did you feel after the performance on the day of?

Elated, and more than a little relieved that it went off without a hitch.

8. What advice can you give to the couples?

Bring your love for each other into the dance and be patient with each other. Our best, most enjoyable, most productive lessons were those where we felt the most connected.

9. Are you going to dance after the wedding? 🙂

Yes! We already did our dance again (in part) last weekend!
