Couple of the month: Adam McNeilly & Meagan Loo

In this article cycle, we will post interviews with some of our wedding couples to help you better understand the preparation process as well as what to expect from the dance on the big day. You can see the dance video at the end of the article!

Dance style: Mix styles
Song: “Give Me A Lifetime” by Anthem Lights
Amount of Lessons: 10+

1. How did you pick a song for your first dance?

Shortly after we met, Adam stumbled upon this song called “Love You Like The Movies” by Anthem Lights. It’s all about promising a whirlwind romance straight out of Hollywood. We considered this song for a while, but after the two of us looked at other first dance ideas as well as others by Anthem Lights, we came across “Give Me A Lifetime” and felt it perfectly set the stage for the adventure we were starting.

2. What was the most important requirement for your wedding dance?

We wanted it to be memorable! Adam was always the kind of person who just swayed in a circle any time a slow song came on, but our wedding was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We wanted it to be unique, and an experience we could never forget.

3. How many months in advance did you start? Did you have a dance experience before?

Our first dance class was about five months before our wedding date! Meagan had experience dancing in the past, but Adamshowed up with two left feet.

4. What was the biggest challenge for you preparing the dance and how did you overcome it?

Our biggest challenge was that Adam didn’t have any dancing or even music experience. When the teacher said “go on the beat”, he was immediately lost. We really had to stress counting each step and even using a metronome to sync the routine with the music.

5. Did you feel comfortable on the dance floor on the day of the wedding?

Yes! We felt that we took enough classes to really feel confident in our dance. During our last class, our teacher Emily walked us through a number of contingency plans for various things that could go wrong, and working through those really calmed our nerves and made us feel prepared for anything.

6. Tell our future couples what to expect from the wedding dance on the day of!

Your wedding dance will go by in a flash. It’s the busiest day of your life, and a two minute routine is a fraction of all of that. It’s a wonderful feeling though, to show off all of your hard work, and cherish those couple of minutes with your spouse in front of friends and family, enjoying a song that is important to you both.

Also, be prepared for anything. About a minute into our first dance, the DJ made a mistake and started to play Mario Kart music! We rolled with it immediately, jumping up and down, before the DJ played a record scratch and we restarted from the beginning. It can be very easy to get upset and angry, but mistakes can happen at any time. Remember that it is YOUR day, and if something like this happens, shake it off and have the music start over. You worked hard on your routine and deserve to show it off fully.

7. How did you feel after the performance on the day of?

Honestly, the first feeling is relief, having made it through a routine that we’ve worked so hard on. After that, it was full of love and warmth. Despite having everyone watching us, the second the music started all of that melted away and it was one of the most intimate moments of our wedding. It felt like it was only the two of us, hearing our song and dancing across the room without a care in the world. We’d just gotten married, what else mattered?

8. What advice can you give to the couples?

Our biggest piece of advice is to start early. The more time you have to plan and practice, the more confident you will feel on the day of the event. Also, have a backup pair of shoes!

9. Are you going to dance after the wedding?

We hope so! We loved the experience of learning something new together, and to hit the dance floor and do so much more than spin in a circle. Dancing is a great way to connect with each other, and whether it’s out at a wedding or in our living room when a cheesy song comes on the TV, it will always be a way for us to come back to each other and share a moment together.
